It is a deep neural network that performs predictions on a dense grid over the input image, being architecturally simpler in design, as well as easier to optimize than its two-stage counterparts. Furthermore, it reduces the prediction complexity by refraining from employing bounding box anchors. This enables a tighter fit to oriented objects, leading to a better separation of bounding boxes especially in case of dense object distributions. Moreover, it introduces an orientation-aware generalization of the center-ness function to arbitrary quadrilaterals that takes into account the object's orientation and that, accordingly, accurately down-weights low-quality predictions","description_state":"present","introduced_year":null,"introduced_by":{"title":null,"paper":null,"first_author":null,"n_authors":0,"url_abs":null,"archive_paper_url":null},"source":{"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2109.06148v4","title":"DAFNe: A One-Stage Anchor-Free Approach for Oriented Object Detection","url_on_a_paper_host":true},"code_snippet_url":null,"code_snippet_url_on_a_code_host":false,"categories":[{"area":"Computer Vision","area_id":"computer-vision","collection":"Object Detection Models","url":"/methods/category/object-detection-models","pwc_aliases":[]}],"n_papers_tagged":2,"archive_num_papers":null,"papers_newest_first":[{"paper":"/paper/deep-anatomical-federated-network-dafne-an","title":"Deep Anatomical Federated Network (Dafne): An open client-server framework for the continuous, collaborative improvement of deep learning-based medical image segmentation","date":"2023-02-13","arxiv_id":"2302.06352","n_code_links":1,"syntology":null},{"paper":"/paper/dafne-a-one-stage-anchor-free-deep-model-for","title":"DAFNe: A One-Stage Anchor-Free Approach for Oriented Object Detection","date":"2021-09-13","arxiv_id":"2109.06148","n_code_links":1,"syntology":null}],"papers_shown":2,"tasks":[{"task":"/task/diagnostic","name":"Diagnostic","papers":1},{"task":"/task/image-segmentation","name":"Image Segmentation","papers":1},{"task":"/task/incremental-learning","name":"Incremental Learning","papers":1},{"task":"/task/medical-image-segmentation","name":"Medical Image Segmentation","papers":1},{"task":"/task/object-detection","name":"Object Detection","papers":1},{"task":"/task/object-localization","name":"Object Localization","papers":1},{"task":"/task/one-stage-anchor-free-oriented-object-1","name":"One-stage Anchor-free Oriented Object Detection","papers":1},{"task":"/task/oriented-object-detection","name":"Oriented Object Detection","papers":1},{"task":"/task/segmentation","name":"Segmentation","papers":1},{"task":"/task/semantic-segmentation","name":"Semantic Segmentation","papers":1},{"task":"/task/object-detection-1","name":"object-detection","papers":1}],"tasks_shown":11,"n_tasks":11,"usage_by_year":[{"year":"2021","papers":1},{"year":"2023","papers":1}],"row_source":"embedded","archive":{"source":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","archive_url":"https://paperswithcode.com/method/dafne"},"syntology_read_at":"2026-09-24T18:15:14+00:00"}
