{"url":"/dataset/mon-iot-r-testbed","name":"Mon(IoT)r Testbed","full_name":null,"description_markdown":"# Mon(IoT)r Testbed\r\n\r\nThe **Mon(IoT)r Testbed** is the traffic capture software developed for the Mon(IoT)r Lab. It is currently deployed at **Imperial College London** and is being installed at **Politecnico di Torino**.\r\n\r\n## Purpose\r\n\r\nThe software serves the following purposes:\r\n\r\n1. **Controlled Network Connectivity**\r\n   - Provides wired and wireless network connectivity to IoT devices and their companion devices in a controlled manner.\r\n\r\n2. **Automated Traffic Collection**\r\n   - Automatically collects traffic from devices connected to the testbed.\r\n\r\n3. **TLS Interception**\r\n   - Attempts man-in-the-middle (MITM) interception of TLS connections, depending on the interception policy:\r\n     - For example, under the *auto-exception policy*:\r\n       - If interception is possible, decrypted data is collected.\r\n       - If not, MITM is disabled for devices and destination domains that don't allow it.\r\n\r\n4. **Independent Connectivity**\r\n   - Offers multiple independent connectivity options with no interference, enabling simultaneous experiments.\r\n   - Example: At Northeastern, three distinct connectivities are used.\r\n\r\n5. **Custom Gateways**\r\n   - Allows specifying a unique gateway for each connectivity, enabling WAN connections such as VPNs without reconfiguring IoT devices.\r\n\r\n6. **Data Organization**\r\n   - Automatically organizes data by device and tags it with:\r\n     - MAC Address\r\n     - IP Address\r\n     - Customized device name\r\n\r\n7. **Experiment Tagging**\r\n   - Enables researchers to mark experiments with arbitrary keywords for easy association of traffic with experiments.\r\n\r\n8. **Traffic Blocking**\r\n   - Uses DNS override techniques to block or redirect traffic for specific IoT devices.\r\n   - Provides a high-level interface for filtering IP traffic for individual IoT devices without direct firewall interaction.\r\n\r\n---\r\n\r\n## Current Users and Vision\r\n\r\nThe **Mon(IoT)r Testbed** is currently deployed at:\r\n\r\n- **Northeastern University**\r\n- **Imperial College London**\r\n- Soon: **Politecnico di Torino**\r\n\r\nAll labs with the Mon(IoT)r Lab are interconnected via VPN, enabling cross-lab IoT experiments.  \r\nThe vision is to deploy the testbed in as many IoT labs as possible to advance IoT behavior research on an international scale.\r\n\r\n---\r\n\r\n## How to Get the Software\r\n\r\n### Latest Version\r\nThe Mon(IoT)r Testbed is under continuous development.  \r\nDownload the latest release and installation manual on GitHub:  \r\n[https://github.com/djdubois/moniotr-core](https://github.com/djdubois/moniotr-core)\r\n\r\n### IMC 2019 Version\r\nThe version used for the IMC 2019 paper (includes automated experiment code) is available on GitHub:  \r\n[https://github.com/NEU-SNS/intl-iot/tree/master/moniotr](https://github.com/NEU-SNS/intl-iot/tree/master/moniotr)\r\n\r\n---\r\n\r\n## License\r\n\r\n**Apache License v2.0**","description_withheld":null,"homepage":"https://moniotrlab.khoury.northeastern.edu/tools/","introduced_date":"2019-10-21","introduced_date_note":null,"introduced_by":null,"license":{"name":"Apache License v2.0","url":null},"modalities":[],"tasks":[],"languages":[{"name":"English","url":"/datasets/language/english"}],"variants":["Mon(IoT)r Testbed"],"data_loaders":[],"num_papers_in_archive":1,"source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28"},"benchmarks":[],"papers_with_a_benchmark_row":[],"syntology_totals":{"read_at":"2026-09-24T18:15:14+00:00","papers_with_samples":0,"samples_harvested":0,"samples_ran":0,"samples_unverified":0,"pointer_only_for_licence":0,"papers_with_no_sample_that_ran":0,"note":"the per-paper counts above, summed; not a rate"},"papers_note":"The archive never published its papers-using-dataset list; these are papers with a leaderboard row on this dataset's benchmarks."}
